Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh Rina Soemarno Submits Her Credentials to the President of Bangladesh

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Bangladesh, HE Mrs. Rina P. Soemarno, has officially submitted her Letter of Credence on 18 July 2017. The Letter was submitted to the Honourable President of Bangladesh, HE Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid, at the Presidential Palace Bangabhaban in Dhaka.

The ceremony was also attended by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Advisors of the President, and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. The Ambassador was accompanied by her husband, Mr. Budhi Yuwono, and by Second Secretaries of the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, Mrs. Fitri T. Prijanti and Mr. Dewanto Priyokusumo.

Immediately after submitting her Letter of Credence, Ambassador Rina Soemarno held a meeting with the President, where she conveyed warm greetings of the President of Indonesia, HE Mr. Joko Widodo, to the President and people of Bangladesh. She also ensured the Indonesian Government’s commitment to continue strengthening Indonesia and Bangladesh relationships in different fields.

The Ambassador expressed her gratitude to Bangladesh who has become Indonesia’s partner in various international and global issues. As members of many common international organisations and fora, over the years Indonesia and Bangladesh have become notable partners. The Ambassador emphasized that Bangladesh is an important partner for Indonesia.

The Ambassador also expressed her appreciation for the remarkable relations in the economic sector between the two countries. So far, there are many encouraging achievements in the economic field, such as transportation, energy, and investment. However, there are still much to be improved, notably enhancing connectivity between the two countries that will sustain the flow of tourism and investment. The Ambassador also specifically underlined the prospect of cooperation in the field of pharmacy that has been one of the main attentions of President Joko Widodo.

The presentation of credentials ceremony commenced when the Indonesian Ambassador was met at her residence and escorted to the Presidential Palace in a state limousine by the police. Upon arrival at the Presidential Palace, the Ambassador was greeted by mounted troops. The national anthems of the two countries were played by the army band and the Ambassador made a round of inspection of the honour guards.

Indonesia and Bangladesh share many similarities, notably the various ethnicities and religions they have, cultural diversity, and modernity. These issues have also attracted the attention of the creative industries in Indonesia, especially the film industry. Contemporary Indonesian films are expected to be well received by the people of Bangladesh because of the similarities the two countries share. In addition, Indonesia has granted visa exemption for citizens from Bangladesh. The same thing is expected to be granted by the Government of Bangladesh to Indonesian citizens. Thus, the flow of visits to both countries respectively is expected to increase, as well as people-to-people contacts.

Ambassador Rina Soemarno is a career diplomat. She was sworn in by President Joko Widodo as Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh and Nepal on 18 May 2017. Prior to becoming Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia in Dhaka, Mrs. Rina Soemarno served as Director/Head of Secretariat of the Directorate General for Multilateral Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2012-2017). She has also served at the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva and at the Indonesian Embassies in Brussels and London.
