Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Walillahilhamdu.

Innalhamda lillah, nahmaduhu wanasta’inuh, wanastaghfiruhu. Wana’udzu billahi min syururi anfusina wamin sayyi-ati a’malina. Man yahdillahu fala mudlil-la lah, waman yudl-lillahu fala hadiya lahu. Allahumma shalli ‘ala sayyidina wa maulana Muhammadin wa’ala alihi washahbihi waman walah.

Amma ba’du, faya ‘ibadallah, ushikum waiyyaya bitaqwallah. Qalallahu Ta’ala: “Ya ayyuhalladzina amanu ittaqullaha haqqa tuqatih, wala tamutunna illa wa-antum muslimun.”

Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar.

Minal ‘Aidin Wal Faizin. Congratulation to all of us for having been transformed into new beings endowed with success. Taqabbalallhu Minna Waminkum. May Allah grant all of our fasting, alms giving, recitation of Al Qur’an dan prayers during ramadhan

The prophet SAW expects Ramadhan to be ended with the success of each Muslim to be free from the torment of hell (‘itqun minan nar). With respect to that expectation, we have to be successful in liberating humans from poverty, ignorance, familial and social conflict, and other sufferings. Ramadhan must generate happiness in family and harmony in society. That hope is realized not only in words, as for a month our mind has been rejuvenated through intense hunger in the afternoon, lengthy prayers in the silent night, thousands of alms being shared, and relentless recitation of the holy Quran. Afterward we continue by visiting our family and renewing previously severed relations. Subhanallah, how beautiful is Eid. If we have not fully achieved that hope, at least Ramadhan managed to multiply the spirit of liberating Muslims from all sufferings.

My Exalted Audience,

Eid this year is very special for the nation of Indonesia, as this month we elected a new president and vice president, who are ready to dedicate their body and their soul to build a modern, religious, and prosperous nation. For some of us, the presidential election seems to be mundane. However, from the world’s perspective, that is an outstanding phenomenon. A country with more than 245 million inhabitants, spread in 17,000 islands and are blessed with multifarious ethnicity managed to conduct an election which is peaceful and democratic. The world is amazed, since Islam as the main religion of Indonesia has managed to play a pivotal role in harmonizing religion and democracy, and even allowed a constructive dialogue between the two. We have managed to answer the widespread skepticism of people who always ask whether Islam is merciful for mankind (rahmatan lil ‘alamin) without discriminating ethnicity and religion.

With respect to the adoption of Sharia law, we are also grateful that the government has managed to peacefully close prostitution centers, including Dolly in Surabaya which is the largest prostitution in South East Asia. This proves that Islam can eradicate immorality, which permeates into the fabric of society and becomes the main source of income for millions of people, through peaceful means.

Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar.

In this occasion, we ought to express our deepest condolences for the disaster which struck our brothers and sisters, especially the victim of the MH17 Malaysian Airlines flight. We also have to remember the victim of violences to muslims in other countries. The most atrocious of all in this holy month is the massacre of Palestinians by the Israel Defense Force. Let us pray that these martyrs will be accepted by Allah in heaven, and that the victim’s families be strengthened. May Allah give great power for Palestinian people and all muslims to fight against ruthless and wickedness of Israil.

Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar.

Now is the time for us to stop cursing the darkness and light the candle by doing real work. We have to realize that strength cannot be acquired instantly. We need decades to create strong Muslim countries. However, all of that can be accelerated through the spirit of lailatul qadar this year: the spirit to build a strong ummah in the future. We should not just depend on the power of angels and Gabriel (tanazzalul malaikatu warruhu fiha) as our savior, but also through economic and political developments of Muslim countries.

Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar.

With respect to Indonesia, let us welcome the world’s expectation for the role of Indonesia in the Islamic resurgence in the future. Whoever our president is, we have to support him to transform Indonesia into an Asian tiger who can patronize civilizations and Muslims. We are not a lowly nation. Our natural resources are abundant, our demography is highly potential, and our experts are being admired all over the world. Our ulama are renowned for their knowledge and expertise, and as a result we are known as Muslims who are anti-violence and tolerant toward other ethnicities and religions. Once again, Indonesia is worthy of becoming a world leader if we are able to create unity among us. Muslims cannot just unite in shaf or line when beginning the prayer, but then are divided in shaf when fighting the wickedness.

Remember the Al-Ghaffar nature of Allah SWT. Allah SWT grants forgiveness and multiply the reward of each kindness. We have to be smart in understanding this message. We have to be a nation which forgets the weakness or mistake of others, and accustom ourselves to amplify the positive sides of other people or group. The tendency to smear others should be transformed into the tendency to give appreciation. Remember the teaching of the prophet that we are commanded to pray together behind the imam, whoever he is righteous (shaleh) or not, as long as the imam has been decided together as an imam. In the context of nationhood, we have to abide and give full support to our presiden, whoever he is, whether he is righteous or not (fajir), as long as he is elected together. As an analogy, the weaknesses in the imam appointment process shall not ruin our obedience in shalat. We are not angels without weakness. Only through that we can become a great and strong nation. And only a strong Indonesia who can lead civilizations; Indonesia must be able to stop savagery. That is the message of our ancestor and our oath that savagery must be eradicated from this World as it is not in line with the principles of humanity and equality.

In conclusion, I shall quote the words of Allah SWT of Surah Ali Imran [03] verse 110, “You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah..”  That is your main task, and you will play that pivotal role in the world when you are in unity among Muslims based on the same faith: belief in Allah. Allah SWT said in the same surah verse 103, “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided…”

May Eid this year unite Indonesians and Muslims all over the world, and I hope that in the future we will actually lead civilizations.

Minal ‘Aidin wal Faizin. Ied Mubarok. Taqbbalallahu minna waminkum. Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Walillahil hamdu.
