TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Two Balinese students, I Kadek Sidiarsana and I Dewa Gede Ary, managed to take fourth position in math category at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) for developing motifs for grinsing, Balinese woven fabric, using mathematical formula. The Intel ISEF was held in Pittsburgh, the United States on May 10-15, 2015.

The students of Bali Mandara Public High School, Singajara, were motivated to develop gringsing motifs due to a concern that the traditional craft is almost extinct.

“It was started with a discovery of the existing basic formula for grinsing motif through a fractal, and we developed it by mathematical formula,” Ari said during a press release on Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Education and Culture Ministry.

Ary and Kadek’s research, entitled “The Motifs Development of Grinsing Sarong,” is a breakthrough since they have applied science in the Industry promoting a cultural object represents Indonesia.

Earlier, Ary and Kadek won a gold medal at Indonesian Students Research Olympic back in 2014. According to Ary, the judges were interested to their research since it collaborated and applied science into culture.

The students were given Grand Awards and prize money of US$500. Kadek said the amount of the money prize did not matter because they had presented their work at the world’s largest research competition for high school students.

“Money isn’t really our goal, but the certificate will be more useful,” Kadek said.

Another Indonesian students who were given the same award in the competition was Luca Cada Lora and Galih Ramadhan from Surakarta Public High School for presenting a research on the benefit of volcanic ashes as natural heavy metal filter.
