After going through an open selection process, Dr. Dinna Wisnu has been appointed as the new Indonesian Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) for 2016 – 2018. There were several candidates participating in the selection process comprising of administrative selection and dialog with the Assessment Team.

The selection process was not an easy one, considering all candidates have proficient background and experiences in human rights promotion and protection at national, regional and international level. Based on the recommendations and other objective consideration from the Assessment Team which consisted of representative from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, National Commission on Human Rights, the Jakarta Post, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), and former Indonesian Representative to the AICHR, the Government of Indonesia appointed Dr. Dinna Wisnu, Director of Graduate Study University of Paramadina, as Indonesian Representative to the AICHR for 2016-2018.

The appointment of new Indonesian Representative to the AICHR through an open process, and in consultations with stakeholders, showed the commitment of the Government of Indonesia in promoting human rights in the ASEAN region. It is worthy to note that Indonesia is one of few countries of ASEAN which undertake an open selection process and appoint non-government official as its representative to the AICHR.

AICHR was established in 2009 as a regional mechanism that aims to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of ASEAN people. As a developing regional human rights mechanism, AICHR still has limitations. With the selection of Dr. Dinna Wisnu, it is expected that the there will be continuity to strengthen the institution and the work of AICHR in the promotion and protection of human rights, in line with Indonesia’s interest in the field of human rights in ASEAN.
