Jakarta (ANTARA News) – The Indonesian government has expressed regret over the North Korean launch of long-range rocket which may create tensions in the region, the Foreign Ministry said.

“The Indonesian government highly regrets the fact that the international community’s call for the DPRK (North Korea) to refrain from the launch of long-range rocket to carry a satellite has gone unheeded,” the ministry said in a statement released on Sunday.

The launch of long range rocket has violated UN resolutions number 1718 of 2006, number 1874 of 2009 and number 2087 of 2013 and has created tensions in the region, the ministry said.

To that end, the Indonesian government urged North Korea to respect and abide by the UN resolutions and refrain from provocative acts, and called on all parties to take steps to ease the tension, the statement said.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday at the request of the US, Japan and South Korea to discuss the launch of the North Korean rocket.

A closed-door consultation meeting held by the 15-member council to discuss the issue of North Korea will take place at 11.00 pm western Indonesian time, the UN said in a statement issued on Saturday (Sunday in Indonesia).

Some UNSC diplomats said the US, Japan and South Korea have called for a meeting following the launch of North Koreas long-range rocket on Sunday.

North Korea claimed that it successfully deployed an earth observation satellite into orbit, after its “long-range missile test”, a move that may prompt the UN to restrict their access to ballistic missile technology.

South Korean Ambassador to the UN Oh Joon has written to his Venezuelan counterpart Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno that the council in 2013 had stated their stand to take significant steps when North Korea launched its long-range missile test in the future.
