The biannual Jakarta arts festival will commence on Nov. 15, embellishing the city with artworks for a two-month period.

This year’s Jakarta Biennale uses the theme “Neither backward nor forward”, signifying the connecting line between the works of all 70 artists taking part in the event. The theme refers to the idea of concentrating on the present, without thinking of the burden of the past or pondering about the future.

“[In accordance with the theme] the works we have selected are to focus on economic, social and emotional conditions in the here and now,” said Charles Esche, the main curator for the event, during the event’s press conference in Jakarta.

This will be the first collaboration between Esche and the Jakarta Biennale, as he was chosen by the organizers to handle the curatorial works, which require complex and specific methods. Before curating this event, Esche was involved in plenty of other international arts festivals, namely the Gwangju Biennale 2002, the Istanbul Biennale 2009 and the Sao Paolo Biennale 2014.

“The Jakarta Biennale has transformed since 2009 by involving public spaces in the city to make the event a platform for critics of the city through the artworks. Esche is the right curator for this, as proven by his experience, as well as by his social, political and artistic visions,” explained the Jakarta Biennale’s executive director Ade Darmawan.

The main gallery for the Jakarta Biennale will be in the Sarinah warehouse where the exhibition will take the form of a small “village” of artworks. Besides Sarinah, some of the offsite projects will follow the work of communities around the Ciliwung River that are regularly affected by flooding, as well as projects in other cities like Surabaya, Aceh and Makassar.

The project on the Ciliwung River has been chosen in relation with the event’s theme. The project will portray the use and abuse of water; it shows water as a basic need of life and also as something frightening because of the threat of floods and pollution.

While the main event runs from Nov. 15 this year to Jan. 17, 2016, there will be additional preceding events running as early as August, consisting of public education, symposiums, roadshows, night-time events and fringe programs.

Part of the public education program is a free guided tour through the Biennale’s exhibition and project venues. The symposium events will host talks by researchers, academics, intellectuals and activists. The roadshow will take place in 20 locations around the Greater Jakarta area. Night concerts will accompany the main venue. The fringe program will display an exhibition of Herman de Vries’ artworks at the Erasmus Huis venue.

Artworks of Dutch artist Herman de Vries will grace Erasmus Huis right after its scheduled appearance in the Dutch pavilion during the Venice Biennale 2015. The exhibition will comprise more than six decades of De Vries’ work, consisting of unique artworks that pair visual art and science.

De Vries’ work in Erasmus Huis, as well as that of the 40 local and 30 international artists that will adorn the main gallery in Sarinah warehouse, will be available for viewing free of any admission fee as the Jakarta Biennale is a government-funded event.
