Jakarta (Jakarta Post) —

Senior cleric Ma’ruf Amin had been chosen as chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for 2015 to 2020 following a national assembly in Surabaya, East Java, on Thursday.

Ma’ruf was recently elected as the rais aam (supreme leader) of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in early August.

Other newly elected officials at the MUI include Anwar Abbas as secretary general, Slamet Effendy Yusuf and Yunahar Ilyas as deputy chairmen and Amani Lubis as general treasurer.

Ma’ruf, who previously acted as MUI’s deputy chairman, said that the newly elected officials will soon conduct some organization consolidating as well as revamping and redefining the council’s work plans.

“We are aiming for a more effective performance, including on matters related to our peta dakwah [Islamic propagation map] and its targets,” said Ma’ruf as quoted by kompas.com.
