RI Vice President at APEC Summit 2016: Inclusive Trade and Investment Cooperation for Development of Villages and Poverty Elimination

Lima, Peru – The APEC Summit as the main economic forum of Asia Pacific is currently drawing the world’s attention. The consultation forum of 21 APEC economic leaders which covers 39% of the world’s population, 60% of the global economy, and 46% of global shoulders the international community’s hope in bringing the world out of the stagnant economic growth and various geopolitical challenges, as well as financial market volatility and protectionism. The RI delegation at the summit on 19-20 November 2016 was led by the RI Vice President, Jusuf Kalla.

“Trade, investment, and connectivity are keys to Asia Pacific economic development and must be supported by open and inclusive policies,” said the VP before the APEC leaders. APEC’s commitment to achieve free and open trade and investment must be maintained, as reflected in the Bogor Goals.

The meeting themed “Quality Growth and Human Capital” is very important for Indonesia to be able to play a role in creating regional economic policies which are in line with national and regional interests, as well as convince the market that Indonesia’s economy is fundamentally strong and conducive.

In its intervention, Indonesia as one of the top 10 countries in terms of ease of doing business (EoDB) based on the World Bank report: ‘Doing Business 2017’ affirmed its commitment to ease trade and investment, and support the APEC Trade Facilitation initiative to improve EoDB by 10% in 2018. “For Indonesia, EoDB in APEC also means easing market access for products that contribute to the development of villages and eliminating poverty,” said the VP.

The Vice President also encouraged APEC cooperation in research and development, technology dissemination, increasing the participation of farmers and fishermen in the the global production network, and promoting effective management of marine ecosystems and fisheries. He also invited APEC economies to lead global sustainable development and act as a mover in overcoming the effects of climate change. Furthermore, the VP also emphasized the importance of infrastructure development for remote and outermost areas.

As one of its achievements in 2016, Indonesia’s initiative along with Peru and Korea entitled “Strategic Framework Rural-Urban Development to Strengthen Food Security And Quality Growth”, was adopted by all the APEC economies. The initiative related to cooperation in building rural and urban areas in a synergistic and holistic way within the context of improving food security and inclusive development.

The APEC Summit produced the APEC Leaders’ Declaration 2016 along with its annexes namely the APEC Services Competitiveness Roadmap (2016-2025) related to cooperation in services trade and the AELM Lima Declaration on FTAAP related to the roadmap for creating the largest regional free trade agreement in the world.
