The Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Wakatobi Regency will stage the Wakatobi Wonderful Festival and Expo 2015 or the “Wakatobi Wave 2015” from 22 to 28 November 2015. Centered on Wangi-wangi Island, the event is projected to be the biggest marine festival ever held in the Indonesian Archipelago.

The event will feature various fascinating marine cultural attractions including the grand cultural presentation of Kariaa Wakatobi which will feature a number of traditional arts such as Lengko, Kandadio, and Kansoda’a. There will also be Wakatobi’s Nature and Culture photography competition with the theme of “Everything About Wakatobi”, Bodi Batang Motorized boats competition, a decorated boats parade, and a whole lot more. The Wakatobi Wave 2015 will hit its finale with a triathlon that combines swimming, running, and cycling along the beautiful shore of the island.

“The event is part of the strategy to boost tourist arrivals to prime destinations in the archipelagon, where Wakatobi is already famous as a spectacular underwater paradise right at the center of the world’s coral triangle” stated the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, at the launch of preparations for the Wakatobi Wave at Grand Mercure Hotel ,in Jakarta on Friday 30 October 2015.

“Moreover, the event is also held in conjunction with the commemoration of the 12th anniversary of Wakatobi Regency” added Ir Hugua, Regent of Wakatobi.

Located right in the heart of the Asia-Pacific Coral Triangle in the province of South East Sulawesi, the Wakatobi Islands offer crystal clear pristine waters and a rich bio-diverse underwater life: a true paradise for Divers. Wakatobi is one of 3 focal points in the World Coral Triangle that stretches from the Solomon Islands in the Pacific to Wakatobi, and North to the Philippines.

Wakatobi alone is said to have an astounding 942 fish species and 750 coral reef species from a total of 850 of world’s collection, which compares with the two world-famous diving centers, the Caribbean Sea that owns only 50 species, with 300 coral reef species in the Red Sea in Egypt.
